December 28, 1938 – May 12, 2026
Willie James Turner, age 87, of Sacramento, California, passed away peacefully at home on May 12, 2026. A man of quiet brilliance and steady hands, Willie leaves behind a legacy defined by service to his country and a deep love for his family and hobbies.
From Mississippi to the Stratosphere
Born on December 28, 1938, in Darling, Mississippi, to Benjamin “Page” and Lerotha Turner, Willie was the eldest of three brothers. At the age of three, his family joined the Great Migration to Chicago, Illinois, where he was raised before answering the call to serve. At 18, Willie joined the United States Air Force, embarking on a distinguished 20-year career that spanned some of the most critical eras in American history.
His military journey was marked by high-stakes technical mastery. From the isolation of the DEW Line (Distant Early Warning) in Alaska to his work on the Minuteman Missile project at Norton AFB, Willie proved to be a pioneer in the burgeoning field of computer science. During the Vietnam War, he served two tours in Hawaii as a top Programmer Analyst, managing sensitive classified data for location targeting. He reached the pinnacle of his career as a programmer for the SR-71 Blackbird, the world’s fastest and highest-flying aircraft—a testament to his elite skill and precision.
A Life of Precision and Passion
Following his retirement from the United States Air Force, Willie transitioned his expertise to the private sector. He applied his analytical mind to the California Almond Growers and later served as a dedicated manager at the Sacramento Bee. There, he was known for his leadership and reliability, ensuring the complex operations of newspaper printing and delivery ran like clockwork.
Outside of work, Willie was a man of focused creativity. He found immense joy in the intricate world of model building, spending countless hours perfecting model planes, cars, and boats. His pride and joy, however, was his collection of miniature electric trains, which he maintained with the same technical care he once gave to supersonic jets. An avid sports fan, he rarely missed a chance to watch or play basketball, baseball, and volleyball. Through his camera lens as an amateur photographer, Willie captured precious moments of family gatherings that he cherished most.
Family Legacy
Willie is preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin “Page” and Lerotha; his brothers, Jesse and Rogis; and his first wife, Kathleen E. Turner.
His memory will be carried forward by his three children: Tresa Turner, Xavier Turner, and Leilani Turner. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Krystal, Enrique, Ke’Shara, Dominique, Quori, and Guedal.
Final Arrangements
In accordance with Willie’s wishes, no formal service will be held. His remains will be cremated, and the family will hold a private moment of remembrance at a later date.
