Willie Lou Harris

November 5, 1932 — March 21, 2026

Sacramento, California

Willie Lou Harris, lovingly known as “Willou,” age 93, of Sacramento, California, peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord on March 21, 2026.

Willou was born on November 5, 1932, in Homer, Louisiana, to Cristell and Hosie Willis. She was raised in Camden, Arkansas, as one of the eldest of seventeen children. From an early age, she embraced the responsibility of caring for her siblings, demonstrating a servant’s heart and a nurturing spirit that would guide her throughout her life. She left school in the 8th grade to help care for her younger siblings—something she would later reflect on with a mix of regret and acceptance, as it shaped the strong, selfless woman she became. As part of that role, she often rose before the sun to make biscuits to help feed her large family. She made so many biscuits in her younger years that she would later joke she did not want to see another biscuit in this lifetime—a reflection of both her humor and the love she poured into caring for others.

In the 1940s, Willou began her first job at the Duck Inn Hotel in Arkansas, where she earned just 25 cents a day. She often joked that if her life were ever written as a book, it would be titled “25 Cents a Day.” Through hard work and determination, she went on to hold various jobs, using her earnings to help support her family and contribute to the purchase of land where the Willis family home still stands today.

While living in Arkansas, Willou was united in marriage to the late Luther Thomas Harris Sr. in 1950, and together they later moved to Oakland, California, where they built a life rooted in faith, family, and service. They shared 47 devoted years of marriage.

From this union, she was blessed with three children: Christine Elizabeth Dupree (Harris), Luther Thomas Harris Jr., and Pamela Joyce Harris.

She leaves behind her beloved sisters, Charlene McKinney (Willis) and Mearl Willis, along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended loved ones who will continue her legacy of love and faith.

A woman of deep compassion and unwavering faith, Willou dedicated her life to caring for others. She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), operated her own daycare, and served as a devoted foster parent for many years. Through her caring and loving spirit as a CNA, she provided comfort and companionship to those in her care—her last patient lived to the remarkable age of 102.

As a foster parent, Willou opened her heart and home to many, including infants and children with special needs. Her love extended beyond care, as she became an adoptive parent and legal guardian to two of her foster children, continuing to pour into their lives with the same unconditional love she showed all who entered her home. Her home was a place of refuge, love, and nourishment—always open to those in need. The same nurturing spirit she showed her siblings as a child was poured into her children, grandchildren, and the many children she welcomed and loved as her own.

Willou found joy in life’s simple pleasures—visiting casinos, playing bingo, shopping (especially thrifting and exploring yard sales), and regularly enjoying a nice cold Pepsi Cola. She was never without her loyal and protective dog, Ladie, who remained a constant companion by her side. She carried a warm and joyful spirit that uplifted all who knew her.

In her later years, after a lifetime of caring for others, Willou was blessed to be surrounded by the love and support of her family. She was especially supported by her granddaughter, Dana Alizabeth Ledsworth (Dupree), who helped manage her personal affairs with care and devotion, ensuring her needs were met with dignity and love. She was also lovingly cared for by her grandson, Braden Thomas Harris, and often expressed how safe and comforted she felt in his care, fondly sharing that he could lift her “like a rag doll”—a reflection of the deep love and trust they shared.

In her final moments, her faith remained steadfast, reflected in her words: “Let Thy will be done” and “Blessed be His name.” Though she will be deeply missed, we take comfort in knowing that she has heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” and now rests peacefully in the presence of the Lord.
