Ty Thi La Point passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 27, 2025 at the young age of 80. She remained active and alert until her passing. She was loved by all who knew her.
Ty was born January 9, 1945 in the province of Long An in Vietnam. She was the fourth of five children of Dang Van Xuoi (1901) and Tran Thi Phung (1912).
She married Frank Joseph La Point on May 19, 1972 and emigrated to the United States in December of 1974 with her first two children (daughters). Two more children followed (daughter and son) after settling in Sacramento, California.
She went to night school to learn English and studied hard for her United States citizenship. She was naturalized on April 30, 1984.
She learned to drive and got her license so she could drive herself and attend Jerry Lee Beauty College to earn her cosmetology license in 1985. She enjoyed her long career of taking care of people’s hair (cuts, perms, styling). Her clients kept returning and asking for her by name.
She prioritized her family over everything. She would bring lunch to her children at school, make sure they had all of the basic necessities and would treat her family to a special breakfast at Denny’s or Wong’s Islander (dim sum) once a month.
She worked hard to support not only her family here, but also her family in Vietnam by sending money and writing letters to stay in touch regularly.
She was a great cook. She treated everyone who knew her to some of her best meals. Chow mein, egg foo young and egg rolls for work potlucks, various soups for her family and friends (pho bo, pho ga, bun bo hue, banh canh cua). She’d make chao ga (rice soup) whenever her kids were sick along with hot chocolate and toast. She became known for her Vietnamese style kimchi. Some of her children’s friends raved about it and always asked for a jar. Not only did she make Vietnamese food, she also learned to make standard American dishes (meatloaf, barbeque chicken) along with Italian (lasagna) and Mexican dishes (refried beans and menudo).
She loved to garden, taking care of tomatoes, Thai chili peppers, basil, mint, lemongrass and various fruit trees in her backyard, which she shared with neighbors.
Her favorite television programs included MacGyver and Walker, Texas Ranger. She loved Chuck Norris. She also had love for 80s hair bands like Whitesnake, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard.
Ty was preceded by her parents, two of her sisters, Dang Thi Moi and Tran Thi Men and her husband, Frank. She is survived by her children, April, Lena, Nicole, Andre, their families, and her brother Dang Ven Den, sister Tran Thi Phai and their families in Vietnam.
Graveside services will be at 10:00 am Monday, December 15 at East Lawn Mortuary, 5757 Greenback Lane, Sacramento, 95841.
