Obituary of Thomas Boehme Mackey
It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved father Thomas Boehme Mackey. He died from kidney failure on Thanksgiving Day, November 28th, 2024 at age 94. “Thanksgiving” tells how Tom lived his life. He had unwavering strength, friendship and gratitude. He left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Tom grew up in Cokeville, Wyoming and loved the “Cowboy Life”, working on ranches and riding horses. He was raised by Harold Thomas Mackey and Martha Johanna Boehme and had two siblings, Dean and Beverly. He went to college at Utah State then got drafted into the army where he specialized in Sound Ranging and Flash Surveying during the Korean War. He married Bonnie Jean Wilde in 1951 and got out of the army just in time for the arrival of their daughter, Kristi. They had Tommy (TJ) two years later.
Tom worked in the wholesale meat business and eventually started his own company (Calvada Food Sales) in California and Nevada with four partners. In time he became the CEO, added new partners and employed hundreds of people over the years. His dedication, drive and commitment kept his business going for 55 years until his retirement, leaving the company to his son Thomas Jr. (TJ). In honor of his grandson, Nick Mackey, his company put on golf tournaments to benefit the “CCHAT” center, a school for the deaf, for many years. He was also an avid supporter of the 4H & FFA junior livestock auction at the county fair every year.
Tom was an athlete at heart and enjoyed playing and coaching basketball and softball. He also loved golf and bowling. He boxed and was intramural champion in college. He loved dancing, and square dancing with his wife. Like the leading men of the “Western’s” he loved, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He engaged in all of the above activities until his health prevented him from continuing. In his later years he enjoyed playing poker and growing tomatoes.
Tom was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He believed in God and said his prayers regularly. He engrained a powerful work ethic in his children which they benefited from throughout their lives. He is survived by his children Kristi Graham (James Graham), Thomas Wilde Mackey (Nancy Mackey), his 8 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren.
We invite all who knew Tom to join us in a ceremony of remembrance at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 8925 Vintage Park Drive, Sacramento, CA on December 14, 2024 at 12:00 pm.
