Susan, lovingly known as Sue, was born in Grand Rapids, MI in 1953 and passed away peacefully at home on October 11, 2025 after a short illness.
After Sue married her beloved husband Michael in 1977 they headed west and eventually settled in Sacramento. In 1987 she began working at Mercy Foundation, which raises funds on behalf of the Sisters of Mercy for those in need. Sue embraced the Mercy mission and her contributions positively impacted the lives of countless individuals in our community.
In 2024, Sue retired from Mercy Foundation yet she remained the heart and soul of the team. As part of her remarkable 36-year tenure, she made warm and lasting connections with numerous colleagues, Sisters of Mercy, Board members, philanthropic donors and others. Many were fortunate to know her as a dear friend and extraordinarily kind human being and were touched by her unwavering empathy and support, trusted practicality and her joyous sense of humor.
Beyond her professional dedication, Sue was an avid knitter, making gifts for friends and family far and wide. Her generosity extended even further, as she also knit hats for men and women in Sacramento experiencing homelessness. Upon her well-deserved retirement, she discovered a new passion: watercoloring, quickly demonstrating exceptional talent. Many were lucky to receive a handmade card or a knitted gift, and each item made by Sue was truly special, imbued with the deep love and care that defined her.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Michael, of 48 years; her sister Sheryl; goddaughter Elizabeth; many nieces and nephews and countless friends. Her cremated remains will return to her beloved Lake Michigan.
She loved a good book, a good thunderstorm, a good stout, a good day at the ocean and her family and friends. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Mercy Hospice in Sue's memory at supportmercyfoundation.org; {916} 851-2700; or Mercy Foundation, 3400 Data Drive, Rancho Cordova, CA 95670.
