Susan Melinda Roberts was born in Sacramento on August 23, 1955 to Henry and Frances Warren of Elk Grove. With her elder sisters Nancy and Julie, she spent her early years in Elk Grove, showing a bright and spirited mind, an interest in visual arts and a joy of working with horses. As a teen, Sue had her own stable space where she would work to train horses, and she had her own beloved horse, Nowata’s Nougat. She graduated from Elk Grove High School in 1972, finishing courses a year early to continue working and begin her time at Cosumnes River College. During her time at CRC, she met her husband, and they later married in 1974. In 1981, she welcomed her daughter, Amy. With her family, she settled in the Wilton area, continuing to show Pygmy Goats, managing their acreage and animals, and continuing to pursue her love of painting. Susan would later settle again with her family in the Sacramento Delta just north of Courtland, and during this time found the career and calling that she was made for: education. A paraeducator for nearly 30 years in Elk Grove Unified School District, Susan worked with students of all ages, from toddlers to adults. Despite many health challenges during this time, such as bouts with multiple cancers and the effects of those treatments on the body, she continued to push forward and give everything of herself each day. Her work was with children of the greatest need, and later with preparing teens and adults to go into the world with better readiness for life. It was work of which she was deeply proud. As time passed, she continued to do the activities she enjoyed the most: creating beautiful gardens, dealing in antiques and vintage collectibles, and having treasured family time at the seaside in Aptos. She retired in September of 2023, taking time to rest after years of dedicated service. After a short period of declining health, she passed on May 20, 2025 from a series of cardiac events. Sue is survived in death by her daughter, Amy, and her sister, Julie Deaver. She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Frances Warren, and her sister, Nancy Angell. She is remembered by many of the lives she has touched as a brilliant, loving, wickedly funny, and fiercely loyal woman of great depth and strength. She is sorely missed. A Funeral Liturgy and Celebration of Life service will be held at the chapel at East Lawn Elk Grove (9189 East Stockton Boulevard, Elk Grove, CA 95624) on Saturday, June 7, 2025 at 1:30 p.m. to honor her memory.
