Stewart Main Quan, “Quan Main Cheung,” was born on January 15, 1943 in the village of Jeung Tun, Nnng Loong District, Chek Hom Township, Hoiping City, Guangdong, China to Mr. and Mrs. Seto Tuy Lai Yen. At the age of 3, Stewart was adopted into the family of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel and Dair Gaim Quan. By age of 14, Stewart immigrated to the US to help run the Quan family business, a mom-and-pop grocery store in San Antonio, TX named Great State Food Store. After losing his father at the age of 16, Stewart had the difficult task of keeping the grocery store afloat while overcoming debt, repaying creditors, addressing dwindling inventories and repairing business relationships. He overcame the challenges of language barriers and lack of formal education to make the family business successful by forcing himself to master English as well as Spanish.
In March of 1968, at the age of 25, Stewart returned to Hong Kong to marry Miss Judy Yuk Yin Leung. Together, they returned to the US, where they continued to build the family business and raise four children. In addition to working long hours, Stewart avidly played league basketball at Palm Heights Community Center in San Antonio and maintained long-standing membership in the Chinese American Citizens Alliance – an Asian civil rights organization aimed at advocacy, civic engagement and community support for Chinese Americans. Anyone that knew Stewart also knew that he was among the San Antonio Spurs’ most stalwart fans. One of his most cherished moments came in August 2025, when he met Larry Kenon, an original Spur from its Inaugural Year, 1973.
As the grocery industry evolved and larger chains expanded, the landscape grew increasingly challenged for small, family-run markets. In 1986, Stewart sold the business and moved the family to Sacramento, CA where he went to work for Alberton’s for many years before retiring.
On April 6, 2026, Stewart succumbed to a 9-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Judy Yin Quan; daughter, Susan Lin Quan; daughter, Shirley Fay Loss (mother to Logan Wyatt Loss and Kyra XXX Loss); daughter, Lisa Quan (mother to Ciera Madison Kline and Chase James Kline); son, Gary Main Quan (wife, Emily Juan); sister, Kim Fong (mother to Sue Jane Woo and Harry Fong); sister, Kam Choi Seto (mother to Mei-Chun Kwan, Mei-Wah Kwan, Kwong-Tung Kwan).
