Stephen E. Huestis

Our sweet Papa - Stephen E. Huestis passed away peacefully on October 6th, 2023 surrounded by his family. He was 84 years old. He was born in Sacramento and raised in Courtland, graduating from Courtland Joint Union High School. Papa had the friendliest smile, a contagious laugh and a heart full of love. He will be remembered through his love of family, always taking their needs into consideration. 

Papa spent his entire life in Courtland. His childhood home is on Primasing Ave. He lived in 3 other places in Courtland - Bates Ave, Riverside Ave and their current home on Harkness Ave.  

He worked for GTE (General Telephone Electric) for 30+ years and retired at the age of 50. GTE is located in Courtland off Washington Ave.  He walked to work everyday. Papa was known as ‘the telephone man.’

He was always a big supporter of the Sacramento Kings, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Delta High School Saints. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Winfield and Alta Huestis and his 3 siblings - John Huestis, Joanne Huestis, and Marlene (Huestis) Clay.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie Kupers (Mabalot) , his sister-in-law, Ofelia Huestis (Aldrete), daughter Lia Kupers, daughter Leilani Garcia. Grandpa to Matthew Kupers and Sarah Garcia, Great-grandpa to Kailey Kupers and Cole Drake.                                         

Although he was diagnosed with Alzheimers almost 7 years ago, he never gave up hope and he always maintained his pleasant and loving personality.  As his sickness worsened, the family hired a full time caregiver, his name is Joe. Joe took care of Papa at his home in Courtland for 3 years. 

Our family would like to extend our sincerest thanks and appreciation to ‘JoeJoe’ (Margie’s nickname for Joe).  The exemplary care that Papa received was a gift to our family. By the end of the 3 years, they became BFFs.
