Shirley Y. Fong passed away in Sacramento, California on March 27, 2025 at the age of 90. She was born in Oakland, California in 1934. As a second-generation U.S. citizen, she was the oldest of 5 siblings. She was a resident of Sacramento since 1961 when she married Kay Fong. 64 years. While being a homemaker, raising three young children, working at Gemco and Weinstock’s, Shirley still managed to get her Associate of Arts degree from Sacramento City College in 1972. She then worked as a Teacher’s Assistant (T.A.) for the Sacramento City Unified School District and retired with 26 years of experience in December 1997. She also taught crafts through the adult ed program in West Sacramento and Broderick for many years. She cherished her many life long friendships along the way.
At home, Shirley was known for making all kinds of crafts. Sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, origami. She was very generous with her time and knowledge for family and friends. She enjoyed many travels within the U.S. with the family in their RV and tours abroad with her husband, Kay. Her passion besides traveling was her two grandchildren. She was very involved with her grandchildren in her retirement years – cooking recipes from her mother Florence Soe, babysitting, volunteering and picking up from school. There would always be steamed bao’s available.
