Robert Chattie Cole

February 8, 1935 — July 4, 2022

Robert Chattie Cole, 87, passed away on July 4, 2022. Born to Robert and Dorithy Cole on February 8th, 1935, Robert graduated from McClatchy High School and then attended Sacramento City Junior College for Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics. He learned how to fly when he was 16 at the Capitol Sky Park. He joined the Navy when he was 20 and spent four-and-a-half years enlisted, during which time he did a tour to Japan on the USS Ticonderoga flying AD-1 Skyraiders. He married his wife Carol on March 23, 1958.

After leaving the Navy he flew aerial survey for Radman Aerial Surveys, Inc. He then joined California’s Deptartment of Fish and Game where he spent 29 years of his career. This was a multi-faceted job that Robert thoroughly enjoyed. He was promoted to Chief Pilot during his tenure with the department. After retiring he continued to fly aerial survey jobs and help friends with their airplanes.

He had a clear passion for flying and aviation, maintaining a pilot’s license from age 16 to 82. During those years he restored a Meyers biplane and a Ryan PT-22, as well as built an RV-6 kit airplane. He loved to waterfowl hunt as well, and most of all enjoyed spending time with family and friends. A firm believer in the golden rule, Robert is remembered for being extremely patient, and never losing his temper.

Robert is survived by his spouse, Carol Cole, daughter-in-law Cynthia Cole, grandchildren Cameron Cole and wife Adele, Candyce Cole, and Colton Cole along with his great-grandchildren Piper, Violet, Norah, & Hudson Cole.

Robert is preceded in death by his sons Timothy Cole and Christopher Cole, brother Boyd Cole, and sister Donna Gould.

His memorial service will be held at East Lawn Memorial Park in Sacramento on July 27th, 2022 at 11:00am.
