Richard Houck

October 8, 1930 – July 14, 2021

We are heartbroken to announce that on July 14, 2021, Richard Henry Houck passed away at the age of 90.

He is survived by his two sons James, Dean (Debbie) and 3 grandchildren; Garrett (Angel), Haleigh (Ronald Ernst), Delayna and brothers Wendell, LeRoy, John and sister Virginia Sumner and his friend Billie Lloyd.

He was preceded by parents Howard and Elizabeth Houck, sisters Bernice, Elizabeth Sumner and brother Lawrence.

Richard was born October 8, 1930 in Topeka, Kansas. He grew up in Delia, Kansas on a farm where he rode his horse to school and raced home in the snow during winter. Richard shared stories with his grandkids about how his High School graduating class had only a handful of kids and he was the only boy. Soon after Richard enlisted, he traveled around doing different jobs. He landed himself in Sacramento, CA, where he worked at McClellan AFB and flew for the Civil Air Patrol in the mid-50’s, then he met and married the love of his life, Opal Houck on April 5, 1958 (who passed on February 6, 2004), and settled in Carmichael, CA.

Richard and his brother John started a landscape company, after some time he then branched off to start his own landscaping company which he called Leafwood. He found a trait in remodeling and building homes. He later built the home of their dreams. He always enjoyed remodeling homes with his sons, creating beautiful yards for customers and friends.

Richard lived his life to the fullest. He was a hardworking, kindhearted person! Always made a stranger feel instantly welcome; and never hesitated to give a helping hand.

Richard cherished the outdoors and spending time with his family and friends. You would often hear stories of him fishing on his boat, camping, flying, hunting, hiking and traveling in his RV to visit his siblings. He was often found taking a catnap with a good book in his hands and occasionally sitting in his camping chair with his feet soaking in a 5 gallon bucket.
