Richard Kenneth Cantwell, age 85, of Sacramento , California, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2025 in Sacramento.
Born on August 30, 1939 in Sacramento to Kenneth and Lucille Cantwell, Richard grew up working a paper route, and playing high school basketball.
Richard graduated from Grant Union High School then later C.S.U. Sacramento with a degree in Business. He worked a variety of jobs which included AeroJet, Sears, and Bank of America before finding work with Sacramento County where he worked 33 years as a budget analyst.
He married Karen Lea Miller on June 24, 1961 and together they raised two children: Susan and Steven. A devoted husband and father, Richard enjoyed staying active. He played basketball for American River College and after graduating, rec-league basketball, softball, bowling, and golf with friends and family in later years. Upon retiring, Richard and Karen bought an RV and took to the open road. Together, they traversed the country numerous times as well as a long adventure to Alaska.
With his daughter Susan, Richard imparted the value of academics, hard work, and professionalism. Susan followed his lead in the business world, getting a degree in business at C.S.U. Sacramento. She later also worked with the county in his same role as a budget analyst before earning numerous promotions, eventually becoming the Administrative Chief of the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office. With Steve, he shared his love of sports, patiently teaching him to play the very same sports that he enjoyed, as well as being his little league coach for many years. For many years Richard and Steve enjoyed participating in these activities together.
Known for exceptional kindness, warmth, and consideration, Richard was deeply committed to his faith as well being an active member, including singing in the choir and assisting with the administration of his church.
He is survived by Karen, his loving wife of 63 years, his children Susan Elliott (Tom) and Steven (Torri), step-grandchildren (Maci, Taylon, Sydni, Skylar) and step-great grandchildren (Titus, Paislee). He is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Lucille, and his beloved dogs.
Richard was indeed a great man. His kindness, generosity, sense of humor and overall goodness will be missed by all who knew him.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at 10:00 a.m., First Baptist Church of North Sacramento, 2601 Del Paso Blvd., Sacramento.
