Peter Earl Willover

December 28, 1944 — February 2, 2025

Peter Willover's life story unfolds as a tapestry woven with threads of faith, family, and a profound dedication to serving his community. Born in San Francisco in late 1944. Raised by his mother, Dolores, and grandmother, Barbara, in Sacramento, California, Peter spent nearly his entire life in this city. His Catholic upbringing became a cornerstone of his values. He attended Catholic school from kindergarten through high school, an experience he credits with instilling in him a deep sense of purpose and a desire to help others. This foundation, combined with the influence of his godmother's son, sparked his ambition to join the police force.

After high school, Peter pursued an associate's degree in police science and married Kathy in 1966, his wife of 59 years. A significant turning point arrived when he was drafted for the Vietnam War. Torn between his aversion to war and his sense of duty, Peter explored options like joining the Air Force police. However, fate intervened when Kathy became pregnant with their first child. This led to a draft deferment and, serendipitously, his successful completion of the Sacramento Police Department entrance exam that same month. This marked the beginning of a remarkable 50-year career dedicated to serving his community. For over 25 years, Peter specialized in sexual assault investigations as a detective, earning him the highly esteemed Rebecca Moore Award in 1995 from the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. He played a pivotal role in the ground-breaking use of a “John Doe warrant,” which, nearly 30 years later, led to a successful conviction, showcasing his dedication and innovative approach to justice. Additionally, he participated in the Pig bowl (the longest running charity football game in the country) for eleven years and was inducted into the Pig Bowl Hall of Fame in 2017.

Peter and Kathy welcomed their son, Paul, in February 1967, and their daughter, Lisa, in January 1972. He was present and proud when Paul married his wife, Valerie, and when Lisa married her husband, Gregory. He cherished his role as an involved grandfather to five grandchildren: Chris, Leah, Hannah, Kayla, and Lindsay. Recently, he became a great-grandfather to Chris and his wife Jennifer’s son, Jackson, a new source of joy in his life. Beyond his demanding career, Peter cherishes these family bonds. He actively participated in raising his children and grandchildren, considering these experiences among the most impactful and positive transitions in his life. He would speak of the births of his children and grandchildren with particular fondness, highlighting the joy and fulfillment they brought.

Retirement, symbolized by his cherished red Thunderbird, opened new chapters filled with leisure and shared passions. He enjoyed golfing twice a week, participating in a Thunderbird club, and, most importantly, exploring antique shops and attending auctions with Kathy. Their shared love of collecting antique clocks, toys, and historical advertisements has become a significant occupation in their retirement. They particularly enjoy road trips along Highway 49, exploring the rich history and beautiful landscapes of Northern California's "Gold Country," a region that holds a special place in his heart, so much so that his license plate even pays homage to the highway.

Peter's life story emphasizes the importance of meaningful work, the enduring strength of family bonds, and the unwavering influence of his Catholic faith. He attended daily mass with Kathy and speaks of his faith as a source of comfort and guidance, especially in his later years. He found peace in knowing he lived a good life, filled with love, purpose, and continued engagement in activities he enjoys. His story is one of resilience, service, gratitude, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life, a reflection of a life well-lived.
