Milton Ray Edwards

If you asked anyone who knew Milton Ray Edwards, what they remembered most, they wouldn’t tell you about his military career and titles earned, they would tell you about his smile, his spirit, his wisdom and the way he made people feel. They would tell you about a man whose greatest rank wasn’t earned in the Military but was being a Husband, Father, Brother, Mentor, and Friend!

Milton Ray Edwards was born on February 1, 1948, in Madera, California, to John and Ruby Edwards. As the seventh child of a family of ten children, Milton grew up surrounded by the love, strength, and values that would shape his life.

He attended Millview Elementary School and Thomas Jefferson Junior High School before graduating from Madera Union High School in 1967, where he excelled in mathematics and science, graduated with honors, and was a standout point guard on the basketball team. Outside the classroom, he worked alongside his brother Willie at the family’s car wash, one of the few Black-owned businesses in Madera.

After graduating from high school, Milton attended Fresno City College before proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force, where he had a distinguished 21-year military career, serving in the Vietnam war and around the world, strengthening the leadership, discipline and character that defined his life.

In 1970, Milton married his high school sweetheart, and together they welcomed one of the greatest joys of his life, their daughter, Erica. Being a father was never simply a role for Milton, it was his greatest privilege. Whether cheering from the audience at dance recitals, celebrating academic milestones, offering wisdom through life’s challenges, or reminding Erica that she could accomplish anything she set her mind to, he was her biggest champion. He was a devoted father who celebrated every milestone in her life and remained her greatest supporter and mentor. His guidance, encouragement, and unconditional love became the foundation upon which she built her own remarkable life.

Later, Milton found lasting love with Teresa Edwards. Together they built a wonderful life in Elk Grove, California, where they shared many years of love, laughter, building remarkable friendships, and cherished memories over their 38 years together.

Following his retirement from the Air Force, Milton continued serving others through a successful career with the United States Postal Service in Sacramento, where he gained his second retirement.

Milton will be remembered for his kindness, humility, integrity, quick wit, and willingness to help anyone in need. He lived a life of quiet service, leading by example and leaving a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Milton peacefully passed away on July 4, 2026, at 3:27 a.m. While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing his legacy of love, strength, and service will live on forever.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruby Edwards; his brothers Willie, Winton, Ruben, and Sanford Edwards; and his sisters Darlene, Norma Jean Vaughn, and Loretta Edwards.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Teresa Edwards; his beloved daughter, Erica Edwards; his brother, Elvin Edwards (Tari); his sister, Sandra Carol Edwards; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, dear friends, and neighbors.

A life of honor. A heart of humility. A legacy of love that will live on for generations. Well done, your watch is complete.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Monday at East Lawn and the Memorial Service at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, followed by Repast.
