Michael Joseph Sylvia, 74, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, intelligence, and deep love for his family.
Mike was born on January 19, 1952, in Levittown, New York. Throughout his early years, he lived in Falmouth, Massachusetts; Newport News, Virginia; San Diego; and Washington, D.C., before his family settled in Sacramento, California, in 1960. It was there that he built a life rooted in family, education, and a distinguished career. He graduated from San Juan High School and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from California State University, Sacramento.
Mike began his career as a Systems Programmer with the State of California. After five years, he joined Cal Farm Insurance as a Systems Support Manager. He later continued his career with IBM, where he achieved remarkable success. Over the years, he advanced to the roles of Worldwide IT Architect Leader and Distinguished Engineer—one of the highest technical honors within the organization. He was widely respected for his expertise, leadership, and lasting contributions to the advancement of technology.
Outside of his professional life, Mike embraced life fully. He enjoyed hiking, traveling, skiing, photography, and playing tennis and pickleball. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family and friends, creating memories that will be treasured forever.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Sylvia.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Sylvia; his daughter, Lauren Sylvia; his mother, Beverly Sylvia; his brother, Rob Sylvia (Eileen); his sister, JoAnne Sisler (Ken); and his sister-in-law, Barbara Farfan (Vince). He also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews: Kylene Nevarez (Manolo), Kenny Sisler (Haley) and their sons, Graham and Ethan; Mandy Sylvia and her son, Adam; Ashley Sears (Clay); Rob Sylvia; Alex Farfan; and David Farfan.
Mike’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Lymphoma Research Foundation in Mike’s honor.
