Lloyd Raymond Price was born on July 11, 1924, in Hartville, Ohio, and died October 17, 2009, in Brookings, Oregon at the age of eighty-five (85). Lloyd was born to Oscar and Sadie Alice Price. He grew up in Hartville where his father made a living for his family as a mushroom farmer. He had two brothers, Richard, and Harold. His widowed Mother married Elmer A. Hursh from Canton. Lloyd graduated from McKinley High School, in Canton, Ohio.
After high school, Lloyd joined the Navy and served from April 28, 1943, to April 3, 1946, during World War II. He volunteered for submarine duty. Lloyd learned Morse Code from a neighbor as a boy and became a sonar/radio man on the submarine Bowfin, SS 287. He received a Presidential Commendation as a Mighty Mine Dodger. He was a Mason.
After his Naval discharge, Lloyd enrolled in the College of Theater Arts, in Pasadena, California, graduating in 1950. He married Gloria Darlene Wolfsen, and they had three children together, Dianne Gail, Lloyd Raymond, and Susan Jean. They made their home in La Crescenta, California in the foothills of the Verdugo mountains. In 1956 Lloyd moved his family to Northern California to take a job at Aerojet General Corporation. They made a home in Orangevale, California. He enjoyed taking the family on Sunday drives most every weekend.
Lloyd’s life was marked by service to others. He enjoyed travelling, and many times worked contract jobs across the USA. He served in the Peace Corps in Africa teaching irrigation systems along with his second wife, Patricia. They enjoyed the southwest, and lived in Cedar Crest, New Mexico. He moved to the high desert of Washinton State in Tri-Cities to take a job at Hanford.
While in Washington, he joined Alcoholics Anonymous, and spent the next twenty-plus (20+) years sober and served as a mentor, teacher, sponsor and friend to many seeking health and freedom from alcohol.
Lloyd played the harmonica, whistled songs beautifully, and enjoyed caring for his birds and dachshund dogs. He enjoyed walks in the park to feed the ducks. Lloyd served with AmeriCorps in the Tri Cities area with wife Carole. When Carole died, Lloyd moved to Brookings, Oregon where he stayed for his remaining years. Lloyd died peacefully at home in Brookings on October 17, 2009, attended by significant other, Jerilynn O’Connor. A memorial service was held for him there.
Lloyd is survived by his three children, Dianne Gail Poppert (daughter), Lloyd Raymond Price (son), and Susan Jean Frost (daughter)/Jack Jay Frost (son in law); four grandchildren, Sandra Jean Poppert, Richard Allen Poppert, Connor Lloyd Price, and Morgan Rose Price; two step-grandchildren, Benjamin Todd Frost and Tracy Yvonne Frost; and three great grandchildren, Cora Ann Poppert, Isabelle Evelyn Poppert and born after he died, Liberty Rose Coyle.
Lloyd Raymond Price’s legacy of service and caring for others on several continents will not be forgotten. May he rest in eternal peace.
