Lawrence "Jack" Fenske, 86, passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on September 29, 1938, to Ruth (Skjod) and Leo Fenske. Jack grew up on a farm in Bemidji, Minnesota, He graduated Bemidji High School in 1956. In 1961, he earned his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota and then left the snow and cold behind for the sunny opportunities in California, where he began his career with the California Division of Highways (now known as Caltrans). He spent 38 years at Caltrans as a California-licensed Professional Land Surveyor and Civil Engineer, ultimately retiring as the Chief of the Geometrics Branch at Caltrans Headquarters.
On November 14, 1964, he married Maxine "Micki" Peterson after a successful blind date. They made their home in Sacramento, California, and later in Elk Grove, California. Together, they had two children: James (Linda) Fenske of Marion, Iowa, and Kim Fenske of Sacramento, California. Jack was also a proud grandfather to four grandchildren: Justin (Sarah), Jenna, Jessica, and Jamie, as well as a great-grandfather to his namesake, Jack.
Jack cherished his memories of growing up on the farm, celebrating 4th of July picnics at the lake, camping along the ocean in Santa Barbara, visiting the redwoods, and socializing with friends and neighbors. He enjoyed planning, organizing, and completing projects, especially in home improvement and woodworking, and he loved helping others with their projects.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. Memorials can be made to the Sacramento SPCA or charity of your choice.
