With great sadness, we announce that Kevin James Curry died on Friday, January 27, 2023, at the age of 49, surrounded by family and friends in Sacramento, California. He was fatally injured by a hit-and-run driver while assisting a friend on Excelsior Road on the evening of January 24, 2023.
Kevin was born August 19, 1973, in Sacramento, California to Robert and Janet Curry. As a kid, he enjoyed racing BMX bikes, playing guitar, playing pool, water skiing, and spending countless hours outdoors. A carpenter by trade, Kevin helped build numerous residential communities in the Greater Sacramento region, including Silver Springs. As an innovator, Kevin sought to develop ingenious solutions to problems and dreamed of being on the show Shark Tank. His greatest accomplishment was his patented invention, the “Curry Nailer-Carriage”, a wheeled nail gun carriage designed to ease and accelerate the installation of roofing – the first of its kind.
After a 2005 car accident resulted in a serious traumatic brain injury, Kevin devoted his life to dutifully caring for the family property, working tirelessly to help maintain the 10 acres. He enjoyed gardening (the family especially enjoyed carving the pumpkins he grew), restoring his 1971 Camaro, and spending time with friends and family. In December 2021, Kevin traveled to Costa Rica with his family, where he enjoyed deep-sea fishing, ATVing through the mountains, and body surfing in the ocean.
Kevin, who is remembered for his generosity, was an organ donor. Although his death is a tragedy, he would be proud to know that his organs allowed three others to live. As one friend so eloquently stated, ”We always knew you'd give the shirt off your back to anyone, and here you go ... giving the heart from your chest! Travel well, brother.”
Kevin was preceded in death by his older brother, Ronald Wayne Curry, who he loved dearly. Kevin is survived by his father, Bob Curry; mother, Jan Curry; sister, De De Curry; daughters, Kaitlin & Shayla Curry; cousins, Mitch & Mike Schwenk; nephew, Chris Curtis; and many friends who became family throughout his life.
The funeral will be held at 2pm on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at East Lawn Elk Grove Memorial Park, 9189 E Stockton Blvd, Elk Grove. Please help us spread the word. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, the Curry family respectfully requests contributions in his memory be made to UC Davis Traumatic Brain Injury research. Traumatic Brain Injury Research Fund at UC Davis
