Katherine Sueko Sakamoto

Kathy was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on December 17th, 1922, and passed away on December 25th, 2023. Her parents, Hyakutaro Mirikitani and Masa Iketaka were from Hiroshima, Japan and immigrated to Hawaii in the late 1890s. Kathy was the ninth child of ten in the family. She was the last surviving child from the family to pass. She leaves numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and their children in Hawaii and the Mainland.

She attended elementary school and high school in Honolulu and in 1944, she went on to MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Il. where she met her first husband, Walter Noboru Hanamoto, who was a structural engineer. Walter passed in March of 1990. In March of 1996, she married Roy Sakamoto and was with him until he passed in September of 2007.

Kathy worked at Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago for many years until she retired and moved to Sacramento CA in 1990. She loved to golf, dance, bowl, exercise and was an active member at the Sacramento Japanese Methodist Church until she was 95.

Kathy is survived by her children Dale Hanamoto, his wife Portia, Claire Hanamoto, and Diane Hanamoto, her husband Donald Paul Walker, several grandchildren, David Hanamoto, Krissy Daegens and Jesse Walker and many great grandchildren from David’s and Krissy’s family.

No services will be held, and any donations may be given to the Sacramento Japanese Methodist Church or to any charity of your choice in Katherine’s name.
