Karen Irene Matus (née Alexander), of Lincoln, CA, passed away surrounded by family on February 27, 2026, at the age of 83.
Karen was the devoted wife of Charles Matus for 60 years and a loving mother to son, Zachary Matus (Suzanne) of Lexington, MA, and daughter, Melissa Mori (Nick) of Sacramento, CA. She was a proud grandmother to Tiberius, June, and Conrad, who brought her endless joy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Frances Alexander, brother, Carl Alexander, and granddaughter, Winter.
Born January 10, 1943, in Sacramento, CA, Karen graduated from C.K. McClatchy High School and earned a degree in Art History from UC Santa Barbara. She went on to earn her teaching credential at Sacramento State, where she met Charlie, and later returned to earn a Master’s Degree in Education. In 1965, Karen married Charlie, with whom she shared a love of boating, waterskiing, and road trips. Karen was committed to her family, supporting her children throughout their lives: while they were young by attending every game, competition, and event, and, later, as adults, by offering non-judgmental and unwavering love. She also relished playing an active role in the lives of her grandchildren. She dedicated her career to children as a special education teacher with the Sacramento City Unified School District, work she found deeply meaningful. After retiring, she and Charlie settled in Lincoln, where she continued to enjoy a full and active life, including book clubs, game nights, and meaningful friendships.
Karen had a love of reading and musical theater and delighted in traveling, but her greatest happiness came from time spent with her family. She was known for her kindness, patience, and generosity, and she will be remembered for her quiet strength.
No services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Karen’s memory with a donation to a charity meaningful to you.
