Joy Elizabeth Zumwalt Vollmer

Joy Vollmer was born on September 10, 1936 in Sacramento, California and passed away on October 16, 2023 after a short illness at age 87. Proceeded in death by her brother Willis Zumwalt and sister Mary Irene Zumwalt. Joy was survived in life by her three children: Mark, Lisa and Denise; her grandchildren, Shelby, Megan, Katie and Nicholas. Joy was so named due to her parents being previously told that they could have no more children due to an earlier medical condition suffered by her mother.  Her parents were extremely pleased with her arrival and thus named her Joy. She lived in Sacramento for most of her 87 year long life and lived in the same McKinley Park area home at the time of her birth and death. Joy was also proud of her historical heritage in that her grandpa first came West to California on the Continental Railroad in 1869. After graduating from Sacramento High School and UC Berkeley, Joy dabbled in the teaching field and eventually settled in as a special education teacher in the Sacramento area. She enjoyed traveling, reading, theater art productions and was an active member in the Sacramento Renaissance Society for many years. She wanted everyone to know that her favorite color was blue. She regularly attended the Unitarian Universalist Society of Sacramento Church.  Joy will be laid to rest during a private service at East Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your favorite charity.
