Joseph J. Ahlering, affectionately known as Jerry, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2025, in Roseville, California, at the age of 81.
Born on May 27, 1943, in Des Moines, Iowa, Jerry was the oldest of seven children and embraced that role with love, humor, and steady guidance. A proud Navy veteran, he went on to dedicate his entire professional career to the care and well-being of fellow veterans through the Veterans Administration, retiring as Associate Director of the VA Medical Center in San Francisco. He attended the University of Notre Dame and remained a devoted supporter of the Fighting Irish.
Jerry was a great father and husband. He led and loved by example and taught his kids to do the same. He was a man of deep character, contagious laughter, and endless curiosity. He found great joy on the water as a dedicated sailor, was an avid snow skier, a recreational racquetball player, and a passionate student of life. More than anything, Jerry was a gifted storyteller—always ready with a quick wit, a perfectly timed joke, or a heartfelt tale that brought people together. His humor lit up every room he entered.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia Ahlering; his son, Michael Ahlering; and his brother, Mike Ahlering. He is survived by his children: Joe Ahlering (spouse Robin Ahlering), Kerry Bernard, and Patrick Ahlering (spouse Jessica Ahlering); and by his cherished grandchildren, Payton Ahlering and Marcus Bernard.
He is also survived by his siblings: Elizabeth Principi, Kathy Shurtleff, John Ahlering, Tom Ahlering, and Chris Ahlering, along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family who will remember him with love and admiration.
