July 5, 1932 — February 24, 2025

Sacramento

Dr. Jian E. Tan passed away peacefully on Monday, February 24, 2025.

Jian Tan was born on July 5, 1932 in Taishan, China. He grew up in Taishan and went to Wuhan University Medicine School for his surgical residency. After he graduated from his medical school in 1958, he worked for Guangzhou Provincial People's Hospital for 24 years and later became an attending physician. He educated medical students and residents, and mentored EMTs, physician assistants, and nurse practitioner students. He was the most experienced surgical doctor in this hospital.

In 1982 Jian made an incredibly brave and significant decision due to many challenges during times of political upheaval in China. Leaving behind everything familiar in search of a better life for his family. He immigrated to the United States with his family. He practiced acupuncture and had worked at a nursing home. It was a very challenging shift, but it shows his commitment to providing for his family in any way he could.

Jian had a fascinating and rich history. He went through World War II: Japan invaded China. The Chinese Revolution of 1949 which includes the Chinese Communist Revolution: captured all Chinese territory except for Taiwan. Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), Covid-19 pandemic.

Jian loved his family with all his heart. He loved his wife of 70 years, Quixian Tan, and had three beautiful children, Jien Tan, Tina Lee and Karen Tan-Wong. He was the best role model, mentor, supporter, and teacher – the best father anyone could have.

In 1999, Jian retired and spent his time with his grandkids, playing pool games with friends, traveling, watching YouTube, and listening to music. He had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. He was often spending his spare time researching topics of interest or reading books. He self-taught, learning to use computers himself and learning to use various software applications. He was highly active throughout his entire life, from childhood basketball, drama, played pool games and played violin. Jian also loved music, Chinese poetry and Chinese literature. He memorized all the Chinese history and all the stories in each dynasty. As a matter of fact, he was a very good storyteller. He was a leader for the bible study group and an active member in the Chinese Baptist Church. He was also the president of the Pu Ying Alumni Association.

Jian fought for ten years in a long battle with a rare disease, all the while still thanking God for blessing him. He was a great Dad and loved his children, he always wanted the best for them. He will be forever missed. Until we meet again.

Survivors include his wife Quixian Tan, son Jien Tan and his wife Cindy Tan; daughter Tina T. Lee and her husband Robert Lee, daughter Karen Tan-Wong and her husband Jimmy K Wong, eight grandchildren: Alison Tan and her husband Justin Mark, Alan Tan, Janet Lee and her husband Raymond Wu, Michelle Lee and her husband Brandon Mambaje, Victoria Lee, Shannon Lee, Tiffany Wong and Jengis Wong, three Great Grandchildren Chloe Wu, Henry Wu, Maya Mambaje.
