Jewel Vickers was born to Katie and Mack Washington on April 16th, 1931. She was the youngest of five children including Jim, Aaron, Bubby, and Dorothy. Together, they lived in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where she attended Blessed Morton. She later attended St. Peters Academy in Dallas. Jewel chose to follow Jesus Christ at an early age, being baptized as a young a girl. As an adult, she chose to be baptized at Paradise Baptist Church in San Francisco, where she was a long-time member.

During her time in San Francisco, she belonged to Shiloh Chapter 30 Eastern Star Fellowship, worked for Family Planning in the Bay View, studied to be a nurse, became an astute real estate investor, and a licensed childcare provider for many children including her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Jewel Vickers birthed seven children, and was a mother of twelve including, Jesse Powell Jr. (deceased), Cleveland Vickers III (Oklahoma), Rhonda Carolyn Vickers (California), Phillip Anthony Vickers (California), Mary Katie Tolentino (California), Kevin Ryan Vickers (California), Babette Matilda White (California), Bwana Sparks, Ryan Matthew Vickers, Mi’Shila Jewel Vickers, Jordan Vickers, Eleanor Vickers, Sebora Vickers, and her God daughter Debra Moss. God blessed Jewel with the innate ability to be a loving mother and nurturing caregiver to over 200 foster kids. Jewel will be deeply missed, yet her legacy lives on through her plethora of grandchildren, including: 23 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and counting.
