James Reed Johnson, 84, of Terre Haute, IN, passed away on June 3, 2023, in Rio Linda, CA. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and a great friend to many. James was full of life, a great musician, blues historian, and mentor to many.

 

James is survived by his children Michelle, Shenda, JJ, and Kimberley; grandchildren Lauren, Mike, Amy, James, Clayton, Levi, Taysia, and Joshua; and great-grandchildren Alyssia, Alana, Mike Jr., Gabriel, James Jr., Enzo, and Elias. He was preceded in death by his father Virgil and mother Lucille. Jeanne, the love of his life, will forever hold a special place in his heart.

 

James served in the United States Air Force for 23 years, dedicating his life to protecting and serving his country. He retired as a Master Sergeant in 1979. 

 

In his career, James was a Modern Woodmen District Manager from 1979 to 1991, where he made a significant impact on the lives of those he worked with. He was also a professional blues musician from 1956 until his passing in 2023, sharing his passion for music with countless audiences.

 

Outside of his military and professional endeavors, James had a deep love for music, having started playing at the young age of 4. His talent and passion for the blues brought joy to many.

 

A private service will be held in Dixon on July 19th, followed by a celebration of life at the American Legion Hall in Rio Linda, CA. Friends and loved ones are invited to join in remembering and honoring James's remarkable life.

 

James Reed Johnson will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy as a loving family man, talented musician, and dedicated serviceman will forever be cherished.
