James Alfred Field, known to most as Jim, passed away on Sunday, March 19, 2023 at the age of 82, after a brave fight with a series of illness.
He was the beloved husband of over 54 years to his wife Jane. He leaves behind two children, Jeff and Jen, one grandchild, Zoë, and his sister Carol Meininger, and many nieces and nephews.
Born in Denver, Colorado to parents Hubert B. and Audrey Violet (Larkins) Field, Jim and sisters Carol and Dianne would grow up in a family that moved across the United States, from Colorado to San Diego to Nebraska, and then New York, for his father’s work as an engineer on numerous water projects. Jim always had a passion for engineering pursuits from automobiles to electronics and communications. He obtained his Amateur Radio Operator License at age 15 allowing him to talk to fellow HAMs around the world, long before the internet. He and his father even installed a 150 ft HAM radio antenna on top of their home in Messina, NY in the late 1950’s.
Jim graduated from Colorado State University, receiving a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering before moving on to spend a long and successful career working for the US Department of Defense at Fort Monmouth, NJ; El Segundo Naval Air Station, CA and McClellan AFB in Sacramento, California.
Throughout his life, Jim was known for his love of family, travel, and his many hobbies and interests: even ballroom dancing, which he picked up after retirement.
Jim will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity or cause of their choice..
