Gwendolyn Patricia Fleming, 91, of Sacramento, California, departed this life on Saturday, June 22, 2024. Born in Sacramento on January 9, 1933, Gwendolyn was the beloved daughter of the late Clyde and Nettie Reid. She was preceded in death by Frank Fleming, the father of her four children.
Gwendolyn was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Affectionately called "Great" by all her great-grandchildren, she cherished her family deeply. She leaves behind her children: Pamela Wright (husband Harold Wright Sr.); Gail Ferguson (husband Lamarr Ferguson); Glenn Fleming; and Rhonda Hammonds. Her children were her pride and joy, a sentiment shared by all who knew her.
Gwendolyn was blessed with a host of grandchildren: Minister Timothy Douglas Jr. (wife LaAnna Douglas); Marissa Acencio (husband Byron Acencio); Ruby Blockett (husband Dwight Blockett); Harold Wright Jr.; Bernard Hammonds II (wife Desirea Hammonds); and Vanessa Hammonds. Her great-grandchildren include Mora Williams, Victoria Williams, Jaylie Wright, Jacelyn Wright, Olivia Douglas, Emberlee Hammonds, Haven Wright, Harlie Wright, Bernard Hammonds III, and Aniyah Douglas.
An educator at heart, Gwendolyn was a true role model and mentor. She was a pillar of the Sacramento community, where she spent most of her life. A proud graduate of Sacramento High School, she always held the Dragons close to her heart. Throughout her career, Gwendolyn worked in nursing, real estate, and retired from the Corps of Engineers. In retirement, she pursued her passion for reading and teaching, mentoring hundreds of youth in a leadership role at the Martin Luther King Library Homework Center in South Sacramento. As an avid reader she knew “this is where she belonged”! Her impact there was profound, and she was truly missed when her time there came to an end.
Gwendolyn was preceded in death by her beloved parents Clyde and Nettie Reid, and her siblings Eleanor Walker, Alpha Reid, Alice Goff, and William (Billy) Reid. She is survived by her baby brother, Wesley Reid. Gwendolyn will be deeply missed by a host of other family members, friends, and co-workers.
Her legacy of love, education, and community service will continue to inspire all who knew her.
