He went on to attend Sacramento High and Sacramento City College before earning a degree in Architecture from U.C. Berkeley. He was awarded a California Architectural License in 1960 and maintained that license for 49 years. Throughout his career, Gerv was known for his hard work, dedication, and client focus. During the battle they were the only battalion from the 1st Marine Regiment to make it as far north as Hagaru-ri. While in Korea, Gerv proposed to Jean Naudine Hixon from a foxhole.
Together, Jean and Gerv were married for 72 years and had 3 children. Gordon and Jean traveled the United States in their trailer for a number of years after retirement and greatly enjoyed spending time together and birdwatching. One of their favorite destinations was MacKerricher State Park.
Gordon had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to be around family. He was creative and artistic and was always planning his next project. He had great interest in vintage trains and engines, as well as aircraft of any kind. He enjoyed watching the 49ers and Formula One Racing.
