Gary Louie Quattrin, 81 years, passed away July 2, 2024 in Rocklin, California.

Born in Watsonville, California, January 22, 1943, and raised in an Italian-American family in Castroville, California; he was the loving son of Guerino and Lena Modena-Quattrin. His strong work ethic was influenced by his family’s businesses and the artichoke industry. Gary graduated from North Salinas High School ’60, and attended Hartnell College, Salinas, CA before entering California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) in 1962.

 At CSUS, Gary quickly became a leader on the athletic field and was a member of the 1962-63 football teams, being selected as the Most Valuable Football Player in 1963. Gary was a member of the 1963 Baseball team and later a student assistant to Coach Cal Boyes. In addition, as a student athlete Gary taught Physical Education at St. Mary’s School, worked at Juvenile Hall, taught swimming, lifeguarded at Mather Air Force Base Officer’s Swimming Pool and was a counselor at 6-BAR-C Ranch. Before graduating, Gary was a member of the United Football League, Indianapolis Warriors; the NFL Washington Redskins, and the Canadian Football League, Hamilton Tiger Cats. Gary later served his mentor, Ray Clemons and lifelong friend, Bob Mattos as an Assistant Football Coach at CSUS. In 1979, Gary was inducted into the Sacramento State Football Hall of Fame.

 Gary’s interest in Law was peaked while coaching and working as Director of Property Management for FPI Management. After earning his Juris Doctorate from Lincoln Law School ’75, he served as FPI Management General Counsel, and a Principal Partner. Gary began his successful law career in partnership with Tim Clemons, and later expanding to include, Morrison England, Steve Campora and David Johnson. The Law firm, Quattrin, Johnson, Campora and England was retired in 2004. He was a member of the California State Bar and Sacramento County Bar Association.

 Gary was a proud Sacramento State Alumnus and continued to support the University throughout his lifetime. He was President of the Sacramento State Alumni Association, an Instructor in Continuing Education Classes in Real Estate Law and Real Estate Syndication, Member of the CSUS Athletic Advisory Board, Founding Member and President of the Hornet-Stinger Foundation, Member of the Board of Directors of the University Foundation. In 2015, Gary was awarded the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service to the University. In 2019, the CSUS Alumni Association awarded Gary and Judy Quattrin the Lifetime Achievement Award.

 Gary served the community as a former Member of the Board of Directors for the Sutter Medical Center Foundation; the Camellia Sports Association Committee Member; Head Football Coach Pig Bowl Sheriff’s 1977-85; Pig Bowl Association Attorney and CBHS La Salle Club-Hall of Fame Member.

 Gary met his wife, Judy Olive, in 1962 as new students at CSUS, and they celebrated 55 years together lovingly raising their two daughters in the Sacramento area: Michele (Chris Powell) and Andrea (Chris Schwarze) and Grandchildren: Kennedy Swift, Carson and Christian Powell; Derek, Savannah and Julia Schwarze. Gary was dedicated to his family and supported their efforts in whatever they attempted often with humor and laughter. Being with his family and friends, walking along the ocean, and skiing in the Sierra’s, brought great joy to his life. Gary will be forever in their hearts as “the best husband, father and Nonno ever.”

 Gary was a testament of love, dedication and community spirit and was admired by everyone he met. He was a generous person, a humble man and a loyal friend. Gary earned a Martial Arts Black Belt, was a lifelong weightlifter and a physical fitness advocate. He was always fondly known as “Coach Q” and his legacy will be one of making a positive impact in people’s lives.

 The family wishes to thank the outstanding staff at Ansel Park in Rocklin, CA and Sutter Care at Home-Roseville Hospice for their loving care and support. Thank you to his lifelong friends who kept him in their prayers and offered encouragement and love.

 A Catholic Funeral Mass will be celebrated on July 18, 2024, 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Marello, Granite Bay, CA; immediately followed by a Private Burial; Reception 1:00-4:00 p.m., Granite Bay Golf Club, Granite Bay, CA.
