Foon H. Lum

July 8, 1940 — March 2, 2025

Castro Valley

Foon Hermann Lum, age 84, passed away peacefully on March 2nd, 2025 in Castro Valley, CA. He was born on July 8th, 1940 in Sacramento to Koon Mok Lum (Joe Quan Ngit) and Yu Dong Ngit. By the time he was 16, both of his parents had passed away so he moved to San Francisco to live with his brother Fred and his wife Rosalina.

He enjoyed going to Kezar Stadium with his brother Gene to watch 49er games and was a lifelong fan. He graduated from George Washington High School in 1958. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served as a cook.

After his service in the army, he moved back to Sacramento to live with Gene at their parents’ house. He worked as a draftsman at Caltrans for bridges in California, and later worked as a computer programmer who designed and maintained the user interfaces for the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Hermann married Christine Yuriko Sasaki on May 27th, 1973 at the Sacramento Japanese United Methodist Church. Unfortunately, she passed away due to colon cancer on April 11th, 1984. He made the conscious decision not to get remarried and focused on caring for his boys. In 1997, he was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and doctors said he would only live 10 more years. Luckily, he beat the odds and got to attend his two sons’ weddings, and meet his three grandsons.

Besides watching 49ers games, he enjoyed fishing, skiing, photography, bowling, watching movies, and going to radio station events to win prizes which he shared with his family and friends.

He will be remembered for his ability to laugh and bring kindness, humor and generosity into the world. He valued loyalty above all else and hoped for his family and friends to have the loyalty and love he felt for them.

He is survived by his two sons, Aaron Lum (Tamiko Wong) and Jason Lum (Yen Truong), and three grandsons, Oliver Lum, Kazuhito Jue, and Calvin Lum.

A viewing and the commitment to the crypt will take place on Saturday, March 15, 2025 starting at 1PM at East Lawn Memorial Park at 4300 Folsom Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95819 in their chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to a charity of your choice.
