FLORENCE ELIZABETH (LEWIS) NUSS
Florence was born at home in Stockton on February 3, 1924, and passed into the care of her Heavenly Father on February 28, 2025, in Santa Cruz. She and her dear husband, John A. Nuss, were married in 1954 at University of the Pacific’s Morris Chapel, and he predeceased her in 2001, after 47 years of marriage. After living in Sacramento for 60 years, she sold her home and relocated to Santa Cruz, to be with her daughter and family. Florence is survived by her deeply loved children: Cheryl Dianne (Edgar) Nuss and Randall Stephen (Wendy) Nuss, and cherished grandchildren: Levi, Ruby, Jake and Johnny. She was preceded in death by her parents, Stephen Paul and Bertha (Martyn) Lewis, both natives of Stockton, her sister Jean Rogers, and her dearly loved niece Paulette (Steve) Brown.
Florence was a long-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Homo Chapter #50, Stockton, where she served as a Star Point and held another office; life member of Alpha Iota Sorority; a member of Fidelis Fellowship for more than 50 years; and FIRS Senior Fellowship. Since 1963 and until her move to Santa Cruz, she was an active member of Centennial United Methodist in Sacramento for more than 50 years, where she volunteered for a number of projects and was Financial Secretary for nine years. Since moving to Santa Cruz in 2014, she became an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Deacon.
Florence was a die-hard fan of the Giants and the Warriors. When her children were young, she volunteered as a Brownie Leader, a Cub Scout Leader, and a project and club leader in 4-H for a number of years. In 1991, she retired from the State Department of Consumer Affairs after 27 years. She and her husband Johnny were world travelers for many years, and for each trip, she kept a detailed journal as well as an extensive photo album for reminiscing.
Florence was deeply loved by her family and friends, and her passing leaves an unfillable hole in our hearts.
Friends are invited to a memorial service at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 420 Melrose Ave, Santa Cruz, on March 15, 2025, at 2 p.m., followed by a reception. Interment will be at Parkview Cemetery, French Camp. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite charity.
