Eugenia McCarthy, age 76, a 52 year resident of Sacramento County and proud US Citizen,
born in Mexico City, Mexico on November 5, 1947, passed away on April 2, 2024. She was
predeceased by her husband of 47 years Vern Richard McCarthy Sr. in 2018, and son Vern
Richard McCarthy Jr, in 1976, parents, Beatriz Monterrubio in 2012, Eduardo Monterrubio Sr.
in 2020, and brothers, Ricardo Monterrubio in 2002, and Alejandro Monterrubio in 1982. She
is survived by her beloved son, Matthew McCarthy, siblings, Eduardo Monterrubio Jr. (Gerry),
Roberto Monterrubio, Maricela Gallegos (Herman), Beatriz Liberati (Dennis), Antonio
Monterrubio (Addie) and sister-in-law Maria Monterrubio and many nephews and nieces.
In her long journey through life, Eugenia established many landmarks that stand out: her journey
began in her humble beginnings, thanks to the example by her parents commitment
for the love of family, the value of hard work, integrity, courage and dedication. At a very young
age, she contributed, along with her siblings, to the chores of a large family of ten. Because of
her maturity and intellectual promise, she excelled in her studies, skipping grades in
elementary school and receiving specialized training in administrative office work during her
junior high years at a private Catholic School. At the tender age of 15, Eugenia embarked on
her professional career, providing Executive Administrative Support to a prestigious company.
In 1965, Eugenia and her entire family immigrated to the United States, where she underwent
intensive English language training before securing roles of various odd jobs. Her exceptional
work ethic caught the attention of Stanford University’s Finance department, where she
managed students accounts and receivables with precision and dedication. In 1969, Eugenia
crossed paths with her soulmate, Vern (Dick) McCarthy, whom she married in 1971. Together,
with the hard work of family members and dedicated employees, they embarked on a
remarkable journey founding McCarthy’s Draperies, a thriving manufacturing and commercial
window covering business that served Sacramento businesses and government entities for 37
prosperous years.
Eugenia was a shining beacon of wisdom, kindness, generosity, humor, and care, whose gifts
touched the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her openness was a source of
inspiration to many, always seeking knowledge and sharing good judgement with a humble
spirit. She had a way of making complex ideas seem simple and approachable, guiding others
with her insightful guidance and compassion. But her understanding was only a part of her
remarkable character. She was kind and generous to a fault, always ready to lend a helping
hand or offer a listening ear to those in need. Her compassion knew no bounds, and her acts of
kindness left a lasting impact on all who crossed her path. Her sense of humor was infectious,
bringing joy and laughter to every room she entered. She had a knack for finding the lightness
in even the darkest of situations, lifting spirits and spreading positivity wherever she went. Her
quick wit and playfulness brightened our days and created lasting memories that we will
cherish forever. Above all, she was a caring soul, whose love and empathy knew no bounds.
Eugenia’s unselfish acts of generosity extended beyond family and friends. During 2002 and
2003 years, Eugenia served as the President of Loyola Guild, a non-profit corporation that
sponsors annual events with thousands of profits toward Jesuit’s scholarship endowment. For
twelve years, she donated her time, finances, and artistic expertise by creating each year a
unique Jesuit Teddy Bears, loved by Jesuit High School students, parents and faculty.
Eugenia enjoyed theater, knitting, music, cooking, art, philanthropy, crafting, travel, collecting
turtles and her Catholic Faith. Truly a remarkable life well-lived.
