Elizabeth Adenike Darego

November 17, 1970 — December 12, 2023

On the 17th day of November 1970, a star was born into the family of Colonel Tunji Taylor and Dame Elizabeth Taylor, of Ake town, Abeokuta South local government area of Ogun state, Nigeria. The star was Elizabeth Adenike Darego.

Elizabeth Adenike Darego (née Taylor) indeed led a life that epitomized resilience, adaptability, and profound compassion. She was the firstborn of nine siblings. Her early life was characterized by frequent relocations due to her father's military assignments, a factor that greatly influenced her adaptability and resilience.

Her academic journey was as diverse as her childhood, beginning in Lagos and moving through Benin, Kaduna, Jos, and finally Port Harcourt. Elizabeth's adaptability and resilience were evident as she navigated these changes, culminating in her secondary education at Command Secondary School Ibadan in 1986. Her pursuit of higher education led her to Ogun State University, where she earned a BSc in Geography & Urban and Regional Planning in 1991.

Elizabeth's professional life was as dynamic as her education. After completing her mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program, she initially worked at Eastern Bulkcem Company Limited in Port Harcourt. Her career there was marked by steady progress, reaching the position of Deputy Manager before she decided to embark on a new path in setting up her own business. This decision reflected her entrepreneurial spirit and drive.

Elizabeth relocated to the United States where she transitioned her career to nursing, a field in which she worked until her untimely demise. Her ability to adapt to new environments and challenges was a testament to her strength and determination.

On a personal front, Elizabeth was married to Bebu Darego. The couple was blessed with two children, including their surviving daughter, Nadine. Elizabeth Adenike Darego's deep faith in God and compassion were central to her life. As a fervent Christian, she not only practiced her faith but also actively participated in her church community. Her involvement in the church choir showcased her love for music and her dedication to her faith. Her commitment to Christianity was further reflected in her love for prayer. Prayer was a cornerstone of her daily life, providing strength, guidance, and a deep sense of connection to her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Elizabeth's golden heart was not just a metaphor but a reality in how she lived her life. Her generosity knew no bounds. She would give her last dime to help someone in need, a rare quality that speaks volumes about her character. Her selflessness was evident in her regular practice of giving meals to the homeless.

Elizabeth's legacy is felt deeply by her family, including her husband Bebu, daughter Nadine, mother Dame Elizabeth Taylor, and siblings Emily Odukoya, Tunji Taylor, Temidayo Adonkie, Gilbert Taylor, Segun Taylor, Abisoye Floro, Tomi Taylor, and Tobi Taylor. She is remembered fondly as an exceptional sister, cousin, aunty, niece, faithful friend, a dedicated professional, and a loving mother and wife. Her life story stands as a testament to the enduring impact of a life lived with purpose, faith, and an unwavering commitment to family and community.
