Daniel William Maguire, Sr., aged 77, of Elk Grove, California passed away on July 18, 2024. He was born in Sanger, California on March 30, 1947 to Marjorie Helen (Breen) Maguire and Gordon Edward Maguire.
Daniel was drafted into the Army at 18 and after basic training, he completed advanced training as a Medical Corpsman for six months before deploying to Vietnam in July 1967. In Vietnam, he joined the A Company, 3/8th Infantry, 4th Division, based in the central highlands as the head medic. On November 7, his company started out on Hill 724 to assist in the battle of Dak To. During the fighting Daniel was critically wounded while valiantly supporting his battalion and was transported to Japan for recovery. When he returned to the United States many months later, he was awarded the Purple Heart for his valor in service to his country.
For more than 30 years, Daniel proudly worked for the U.S. Postal Service, first as a mail sorter and later in the philatelic window. (His children found it uncanny that he recited zip codes in his free time.) Upon retirement, Daniel spent time with his family and friends, and focused on writing his memoir, which he dedicated to his children.
He is survived by his wife Vivian; his children Christine (Matthew), Daniel Jr., Deborah (David), Troy (Crystal), Nick Day (Zoe), Ashlea (Benny), and Tyler (Laura); his stepdaughters Sabrina (Walter) and Theresa (Ruben); his grandchildren Manley, Asher, Abigail, Emilee, Olivia, Benjamin, Miles, Emma, Evie, Toby, Poppy, Byron, and Teddy; and his step-grandchildren Jasmine, Julienna, Michael, Elijah, and Xavier. He was preceded in death by his daughter Catherine.
Daniel was a fan of the Oakland A’s, a novice genealogist, an UNO enthusiast, and loved Siamese cats. He will be dearly missed by his family and his many friends.
A viewing will be held on 8/15 at 5pm at the East Lawn Funeral Home and on 8/16 at 10am he will be buried at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery with military honors.
