Dan Nishimi

Dan Hidehiko Nishimi passed away peacefully at home on May 20, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Dan was born on September 25, 1943, to Toshihiko and Shigeno Nishimi in Newell, California, at the Tule Lake Segregation Center. Following his family's release in 1946, they settled in Sacramento, where Dan spent his childhood. Dan graduated from Sacramento High School in 1961 and subsequently earned a degree in Fine Arts from California State University Sacramento in 1972.

Dan proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1963 to 1967 during the Vietnam War, serving with Marine Composite Reconnaissance Squadron One (VMCJ-1) as a combat photographer.

In December 1967, Dan met the love of his life, Doreen. They married on March 29, 1969, and shared 57 years of love, faith, and devotion. Together they raised two children and later delighted in becoming grandparents to 5 beautiful grandchildren.

Dan worked for EF Corbin Company as a space planner and interior designer for 18 years before founding Ibex, an office space planning and furniture supply company that he operated until retirement.

In 1993, Dan began a long physical battle that he faced with remarkable strength, perseverance, and faith. Throughout his challenges, he remained devoted to his family and grew in his trust in God.

Dan is survived by his beloved wife, Doreen; son, Darrell Nishimi (Tammy); daughter, Rachel Moore (Greg); five grandchildren: Maryn Moore, Aislinn Moore, Keegan Moore, Alex Nishimi, Sam Nishimi; and his sister, Sharon Adams. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Toshihiko and Shigeno Nishimi, brother Kiyoshi Nishimi, and sister Yoshiko Hamasaki.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dan’s honor to the UC Davis Hospice Program. https://give.ucdavis.edu/1012/9100824
