Carol Gertrude Nelson, 89, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 14, 2025, in her home with her family at her side. Carol was born in Racine, Wisconsin on March 24, 1935. She married Frederick (Fred) L. Nelson on September 24, 1955. Carol’s fun-loving, competitive nature was reflected in her love of sports and games, from participating on her high school debate team to playing tennis through her 70s, earning National Master Bridge Player status, and always rooting for her beloved Packers. She was very smart and kept a sense of humor. She was a longtime volunteer at Mills Memorial Hospital in Burlingame, CA, until she and Fred retired to Redding, CA. She was an active parishioner at Our Lady of Mercy in Redding where she lectured and was an Extraordinary Minister to the sick and homebound. Carol is survived by her husband Fred of 69 years; her children Kathy, Vickie (John), Mike (Kathy), Mari (Bruce), Tony, and Greg (Laureen); her 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and four sisters. A rosary will be prayed on Thursday, March 27, at 10:30 at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church in Elk Grove, CA, with a funeral Mass immediately following. Private interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Redding, CA. In lieu of flowers, please offer a prayer of thanksgiving to God for the time we had with our beloved Carol.
