Bernie T. Joanino peacefully passed away at home in Elk Grove, CA on March 15, 2023.
Her 80 years of life were fused with adventure, joy, love, and courage. Born in Mangaldan, Pangasinan, and raised in Caloocan City, Manila, Philippines, Bernie was the eldest child of Felix and Felicisima Tomenbang, and the only girl in a brood of 5 kids. Sharp and head strong, she graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a BS degree in Chemical Engineering in 1964 and immigrated to the US in 1972. Her chemistry work experiences streamed and progressed within the pharmaceutical, food, and biotechnology industry. Her move to the US became the advent of her journey towards a beautiful life with husband of 48 years Fernando, and children Radino, Jerome, and Christopher. She called the Chicago metropolitan home for 18 years, moved to Milpitas, CA in 1991 and upon retirement, blissfully settled down in Elk Grove, CA.
She was a phoenix. Caring, affable, loyal, and brave. She nurtured everyone around her, made friends everywhere she went, supported family and friends without questions, and remained steadfast no matter the size of an obstacle. It brought her joy to cook, garden, play mahjong with friends, go to church, travel, and spend time with loved ones.
Bernie is survived by her loving husband Fernando, sons Radino, Jerome and Christopher, daughters-in-law Joesel and Anna, grandchildren Jake, Ryleigh, Elijah, Zoey and Daphne, brothers Lito and Mario, sisters-in-law Jovy, Annie and Julie, and a great deal of extended family and friends from around the world.
