Arthur Nunes Alves

November 17, 1942 — March 15, 2024

Elk Grove, CA

Arthur Nunes Alves, 81, of Elk Grove, California, previously a long-time resident of San Jose, California, passed away on March 15, 2024. Born November 17, 1942, in Norte Grande, Sao Jorge, Azores to Julio Silveira Alves and Maria Jose Nunes Alves. Arthur leaves behind a heartbroken family, including his wife of 52 years Durvalina, his children Suzana Leiva (Tony), Elizabeth Ward, and Nelson Alves (Kaite). In addition, he leaves behind 7 grandchildren, Lauren, Madeline, Carson, Easton, Cameron, Hailey, and Huckson. Arthur is survived by his sisters Alvarina Dutra, Filomena Martins (John), Analia Vieira (Clemente), and brother Alexandrino Alves (Maria). Arthur was preceded in death by both of his parents, his brother Alvarino Alves and his son-in-law Lester Ward. Arthur leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews, as well as cousins and friends.

Arthur moved from Norte Grande, Sao Jorge to Sao Bento, Terceira, Azores at the age of 9. At the age of 21, he joined the Portuguese Army and then after completing his service joined the Police Academy and moved to Lisbon, Portugal. After graduating from the Academy, he returned to Terceira, Azores and started his career as a Police Officer. At the age of 23, Arthur set eyes on his beautiful neighbor, Durvalina. They started a 6-year courtship before he decided he wanted to join his mother in the United States. Arthur moved to Pescadero, California in October of 1971 and Durvalina joined him shortly after in November. On November 21, 1971, Arthur and Durvalina were married at Five Wounds Portuguese National Church in San Jose, California.

Both Arthur and Durvalina worked at Duarte’s Tavern in Pescadero for a short time before Arthur started working at Specialty Solid Waste in Sunnyvale, California as a Sanitation Worker. In 1972, they moved to the area of Little Portugal in San Jose, California and remained in San Jose until Arthur and Durvalina both retired in August of 2003. Arthur worked at Specialty for 30+ years but during that time he was also quite the entrepreneur. Arthur had a radio program on KRVE titled “Cancoes de Portugal” and had the perfect “radio voice”. Then in 1989, Arthur decided to start a limousine business named, Nine Islands Limousine Service. Arthur spent many weekends with Elizabeth as his GPS (and translator) driving young teens to prom and bridal parties to the church.

Once Arthur and Durvalina retired in 2003; they decided it was time to leave San Jose and venture off to Cameron Park, California to be near family. Arthur enjoyed his time gardening in his yard, and helping his brother-in-law John with whatever project needed to be done. He was very proud of his beautiful roses and the garden of kale, fava beans, and whatever else was in season. In 2019, Arthur and Durvalina thought it was best to be closer to their kids and grandchildren and moved to Elk Grove where he spent his final years.
Arthur’s favorite pastime was simply spending time with his wife, 3 children, and his 7 beautiful grandchildren. Along with gardening, he loved watching the news, and his beloved Portuguese shows on RTP. Oh, and let’s not forget, VIVA BENFICA!
