Artemio Saria Candalla, Sr. was born on October 20, 1928 in Alapan, Imus, Cavite, Philippines. He joined his Creator on April 16, 2022 after a lingering illness, at the Methodist Hospital of Sacramento. He was 93 years old.
Artemio was known to friends and acquaintances as âTemiong.â To the numerous people he had freely helped with their respective problems about either the law or law enforcement, he was known as âSarhentoâ ---the Spanish and Tagalog word for âsergeant.â
Artemio was an aspiring lawyer. He was on his third year proper when he had to drop out due to increasing family demands. He joined the Imus Police Department, and within a short time, he rose to become a sergeant. He took the national Civil Service Commission exam for Chief of Police in 1964 and passed. The then mayor offered him the job, but he respectfully declined.
He instead applied with the Manila Police Academy to join the capital cityâs police force. He passed and subsequently, was the topnotcher of his class in academics. He became a detective.
In 1970, the Manila Jaycees conferred on him their Citizenâs Award as an Outstanding Police Officer of the Manila Police Department. After more than twenty years of service, he retired from the force and followed his family to the United States.
