Anni Heckert (nee Thormann) was born April 30th, 1928, in Vollmarshausen, (near Kassel) Germany, the only child of Heinrich and Elisabeth Thormann. She grew up surrounded by many cousins and extended family.
She met her husband, Rudolf “Rudi” Heckert after the war and they had a daughter, Annemarie and then son, Herbert. The family immigrated to Vancouver, Canada in the mid 1950’s where they developed lifelong friendships. In 1957 they moved to Glendale, California and a couple of years later to Sacramento where they settled down and had their daughter Linda.
Anni and her husband enjoyed spending time with friends and family exploring their vicinity, hiking, camping and fishing and generally enjoying the outdoors. They also actively participated as members of the Hermann Sohne at the Turn Verein for many years. Anni was a devoted homemaker taking care of her children and later her grandchildren. She was an exceptional seamstress and created beautiful dresses and elaborate costumes for her grandchildren. She was a great baker and started making her own sourdough bread in Canada when she couldn’t find any breads that were close to the European breads she had enjoyed back in Germany. She shared her love of baking with her grandson Brennan, they created a tradition where they baked Christmas cookies and doughnuts for New Years Eve.
Anni is survived by her children, Annemarie Shetka (Michael), Herbert Heckert (Marsha) and Linda Crough (Brian) and her grandchildren Rachel, Michael, Jessica and Brennan and five great grandchildren.
The family would like to express gratitude for the exceptional and loving care provided by Betty and Natalie and the rest of the staff of the Four Seasons Home Care.
The funeral will be held at East Lawn Cemetery in Elk Grove, CA on Tuesday August 1st, 2023, at 10am.
