Amy Carroll Shaffer passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on May 8, 2026 after a lengthy and difficult journey with dementia.
Amy was born on May 30 1950 to George and Nanette Wertz. She was the oldest of three children and is survived by her brothers David and Philip Wertz.
She graduated from Palo Alto High School in 1968 and then attended the University of California Davis where she graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She then began her career in the Trust Department of Wells Fargo Bank in downtown San Francisco as an escrow officer, closing millions of dollars in transactions. While in San Francisco she met Bruce Shaffer, who was attending law school. Amy and Bruce were married in December 1974 and, shortly thereafter, moved to Sacramento.
Amy transferred to the downtown Sacramento Wells Fargo Bank Trust Department and continued her work as an escrow officer. She was the primary escrow officer for the newly constructed Campus Commons and East Ranch projects developed by Robert Powell.
Her two sons, Jared and Brian, were born in 1979 in 1981 and Amy became a stay at home mother until they were both in school. She later returned to work in the libraries of Valley and Sheldon High Schools in Elk Grove and was a substitute teacher in many Elk Grove elementary schools. She later worked in the office at Franklin Elementary School in Elk Grove before fully retiring.
As the years has passed, Jared and Brian married and, to Amy’s great delight, she became a grandmother to six incredible grandchildren. She adored them all, and, would occasionally spoil them with a present or two, especially at Christmas.
After becoming empty nesters when the boys went off to college, she and Bruce traveled the world, sharing many amazing experiences. She loved the beach and vacations usually included a great deal of beach time. Amy also loved gardening and spent countless hours in her yard.
Amy is survived by her husband Bruce, sons Jared and Brian (Tami) and those six grandchildren: Ben, Emilie, Tessa, Will, Tim and Michael as well as her brothers David Wertz (Tina) and Philip Wertz (Pamela). Amy’s companionship, kindness, and compassion for others will be missed. She was a great friend, wife, mother and grandmother. She was special.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to all the caregivers and staff at Wellquest of Elk Grove, where Amy spent her last two years. Amy was loved by all and received wonderful care throughout her difficult journey. The family also wishes to thank the staff at First Call Hospice who helped Amy and her family navigate Amy’s final months.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am on June 1, 2026 at the Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church, 32890 S. River Rd. in Clarksburg, Ca. with a reception to follow. At a later date a Celebration of Life will take place.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Elk Grove Regional Scholarship Foundation where scholarships will be established in Amy’s memory.
