Sacramento

Amelia “Nelly” Anchita Gregg passed away in the early hours of January 27th in Sacramento, CA at the age of 90.

Nelly was born to Irene and Toby Anchita in San Fernando La Union, Philippines. A US Airforce serviceman, Toby moved the family to Sacramento, CA where they built a home and Nelly and her sister Norma went to school while he served several deployments overseas. Nelly was previously married to James Versola with whom she had two sons, Kenneth and Robert, and remained close with the extended Versola family. She moved to the San Francisco Bay area to work at The Presidio Army base and was sent for further education and training in business, accounting, and civil service to become Director of Family Housing at the base. She was often chosen for ceremonial roles in celebrations alongside generals because of her importance to the families living there and because she was “the cutest one there!” This period of her life cemented her American patriotism and her fandom of San Francisco teams the Giants and the 49ers. At the Presidio she met an army engineer named Gale Gregg who became her friend and then husband. Nelly and Gale moved to Sacramento and ran a home inspection and repairs business for years. After selling the business, the two enjoyed retirement together welcoming grandchildren and great-grandchildren, hosting parties, traveling in their motor home, and spending time with family far and near. She had a green thumb and loved her plants, she took in several rescued pets, sometimes to Gale’s chagrin, and she was master of the flat-rate box care package. She continued to travel regularly, even solo, to visit family across the US and in the Philippines until the last month of her full life when she was laid up with the illness that brought about her final rest.

Amelia was preceded in death by her parents Irene and Toby Anchita, husband Gale, brother-in-law Teddy Walton, stepdaughter Jennifer, and daughter-in-law Donna. She is survived by her sister, Norma, sons Kenneth and Robert (Susan), stepchildren Gaylon, J Leigh (Susie), Scott, and Molly, grandchildren Nicholas (Courtney), Daniel (Tiffnie), Amber (Matt), Lindsey (John), Adam, and Amellia (Nick), and step-grandchildren Shaun, Brooke, Nick, Alisha. She was GG (great grandma) to Brandon, Toby, Braelynn, Maka, Kawena, Kalei, Nathan, Makilee, Noah, Irene, James, and Sadie. She is also mourned by cousins, nieces, nephews, bonus family members, and many friends who will remember her as Manang, Auntie, Grandma Nelly.

A memorial will be held and condolences received March 30th at East Lawn Funeral Home 9189 E. Stockton Blvd. Elk Grove, CA.
